Teaching Adult English Language Learners at Beginning Language and Literacy Levels
Hearing pins drop in the classroom when you ask questions? Catching confusion in the corner of your eye? How do practitioners design and pace instructional content, delivery, practice, and review with beginning-level learners of English?
Participants learn about the challenges of and research on working with this learner population; work through activities that help them understand the importance of learner needs assessment; enhance their knowledge of literacy-level learners’ diverse backgrounds; and begin to identify and develop activities to promote speaking, listening, reading, and writing for learners in their classes. As an assignment, they plan and deliver a lesson using the information they learn in the course and then share results of strategies they used and activities they tried in their classes. They also work through additional strategies, activities, and ongoing planning.
Goal: Practitioners learn about and plan and deliver lessons for beginning- and literacy-level English language learners.
Expected outcomes:
- Develop techniques for conducting a needs assessment with beginning learners.
- Learn techniques for providing instruction for this population.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate lessons for use with this population.
