Standards-Based Instruction for Adult English Learners
It is no longer enough for instructors working with adult English language learners to just “teach English.” Instructors need to prepare their learners to be successful in their careers and in further study and to meet the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards. What does it take to be standards ready? This presentation looks at the speaking and listening strands, language standards, and reading and writing strands, providing evidence-based strategies and classroom activities to use with adults – at all levels of proficiency – who are learning English. In addition, the role of cultural and sociolinguistic competence and its importance in preparing adult English language learners will be explored.
Expected Outcomes
Participants will be able to
- Describe at least five skills needed for postsecondary education and workforce preparation per the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards for Adult Education.
- Explain the roles of knowledge, evidence, and complexity in the CCR standards
- Identify particular challenges of ELLs in meeting the standards and the role of cultural competence in meeting the standards
- Discuss evidence-based strategies to help students begin to address the CCR standards and how they can use these strategies in their instructional contexts.
