Imagine you were in Professor Yuki’s position. Which type of assessment would you use: placement, formative, summative? How would you address the challenge described in this situation?Â
- In this situation, I would utilize some form of alternative formative assessment to accommodate this classroom’s diversity of needs. For example, students could choose topics to give presentations on, which would allow me to assess speaking proficiency. At the same time, the rest of the class could write short reflections on the presentations or comments for the presenter, and provide an example of their writing and reading proficiencies. This multimodal approach would assess various skill domains, and the collaborative aspect would be appropriate for the age and experience levels of college students.
