WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 19—Researchers at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) have published actionable recommendations for states and districts educating English learners during the on-going pandemic. The publication supports the work of the newly established national research and development center, the Center for the Success of English Learners (CSEL), funded for 5 years through the Institute of Education Sciences.

CAL staff and partners, including Trey Calvin, Maria Cieslak, Dr. Joel Gómez, and Dr. Diane August, contributed to the report.

The new publication, entitled “Educating English Learner Students During the Pandemic: Remote & In-person Instruction & Assessment,” includes a summative list of all 50 states’ resources and policies pertaining to English learners in a remote or in-person setting since the beginning of the pandemic.

The report also examines:

• Current federal legislation that authorizes funds for a variety of activities that could be used to support ELs and their families;
• The impact of remote learning on EL students and their teachers; and
• The potential and limitations of using digital learning resources (DLRs) to educate these students.
