CAL is saddened by the passing of Christopher N. Candlin, a major force in the field of applied linguistics and instrumental in its establishment as a respected discipline in Australia and worldwide. Throughout his career, his work pursued a greater understanding of the role of language and other forms of communication in a range of social contexts, and on using this understanding to develop solutions to issues in a wide range of areas including language teaching and learning, and professional communication.
