Expanding educational opportunities in Ghana: bilingualism and biliteracy for young learners
Reading Assessments
To provide a direct measure of the literacy program success, CAL created reading assessments for use in early Primary Schools in twelve Ghanaian languages and English. Each test was developed along parallel lines following a common set of assessment standards loosely based on the Literacy Standards and Milestones.
Each assessment addresses basic skills such as print recognition, word/picture association, phonics, and inferencing within full paragraph level comprehension. The assessments also address intermediate skills such as phrase and sentence level comprehension. Content of the tests includes both narrative and expository materials. The result of this effort was a set of tests that shows strong reliability and internal consistency across individual tests and high discriminability over a wide range of pupils.
