English Literacy/Civics
Depending on the type of local program and funding, civics (or EL/civics) may be included in a general (or other) ESL class or in specially designated classes that highlight learning English in a civics education context. In either case, for adult English language learners, civics education includes
- Instruction on how to gain U.S. Citizenship;
- Instruction about U.S. history and culture, including lessons on diversity and multiculturalism; and
- Instruction and guidance on becoming active participants in their communities.
