How Long to Learn That Language? Here’s a Map for That

The US State Department's Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Va., which provides language training to US diplomats, has mapped the difficulty of some languages to give an idea of how much time is needed for English-language speakers to learn them. Germanic languages, such as Dutch and Swedish, and Romance languages, such as French and Spanish, take about 24 weeks to reach speaking and reading proficiency, according to the data.
