Both native English speakers and English language learners with low literacy in English may be vulnerable to scams so avoiding fraud is an important practical living skill. As part of an initiative to help underserved audiences boost their consumer skills, a federal agency has created free multimedia resources. This session explores how the agency and a non-profit contractor collaborated on a program to train agency staff to produce easy-to-use materials that communicate effectively and appropriately with new arrivals and people with low literacy. The materials are intended to teach practical living skills but also can reinforce students’ reading, writing, and listening skills. Presenters share online, print, audio, and video materials they developed for this audience and discuss strategies for the use of these resources that can reinforce students’ reading, writing, and listening skills.
