Dr. Masako O. Douglas

Dr. Masako O. Douglas has been working on constructing and applying a theoretical framework to design Japanese as a heritage language (JHL) curricula for grades K-8 and college courses. She developed a curriculum for a community-based school and college courses at the University of California, Los Angeles, and California State University, Long Beach. She has publications on young heritage Japanese learners' language background, language acquisition, and literacy development and on pedagogy in Japanese as a heritage language courses. She is conducting a large-scale research project with her colleagues on college students' motivation to learn Japanese as a heritage language. Dr. Douglas is one of the founders and a coordinator of JHL Special Interest Group of the Association of Teachers of Japanese, which aims to exchange and disseminate insights in JHL pedagogical research and practice. She is also one of the founders of an online refereed journal, JHL Journal: Working Papers of Japanese Heritage Language Education.

Dr. Nariyo Kono

Dr. Nariyo Kono works to support heritage language learners and programs in the Southwest and the Northwest areas of the United States. Her work focuses on Native American community learners as well as Japanese heritage language learners. Her recent community-based research focuses on Kiksht, one of the most endangered Native American languages in the Northwest. She is particularly interested in helping heritage language communities to maintain and revive their languages by partnering with community members. She is in the process of developing both graduate and undergraduate certificate programs for endangered language revitalization at Portland State University to serve students' and communities' needs.

Ms. Keri James

Keri James works in New Mexico and manages federal and state programs for her district. She is particularly interested in helping programs and individuals implement heritage language revitalization programs, specifically for Native American languages (specifically Navajo).

Mr. Hseuh-Ming (Tommy) Lu

Mr. Hseuh-Ming “Tommy” Lu works at the Delaware Technical and Community College as an Instructional Coordinator in the Computer Information Systems Department. He also serves as the Vice Principal of the Chinese School of Delaware and a board member of the Pencader Charter High School on a volunteer basis. In the past, he has served in several volunteer positions in the Chinese heritage language school systems. These include President of the Association of Chinese Schools (ACS) and President of National Council of Associations of Chinese Language Schools (NCACLS). He is particularly interested in helping programs and individuals set up Chinese language programs and curricula in Chinese heritage schools and mainstream K-12 schools.

Paul Sandrock

Paul Sandrock serves as the Assistant Director of the Content and Learning Team (all curriculum areas) of the State of Wisconsin's Department of Public Instruction.  He has worked on several projects is in the area of assessment of world languages, focusing on performance and standards-based measures that help teachers focus students' learning.  He is coordinating the review of Wisconsin's model academic standards under both the American Diploma Project and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills to improve students' transition from high school to college and careers.

Phuong Chi Nguyen

Phuong Chi Nguyen is a member of the Vietnamese community in Washington state and also works with Chinese and Russian programs that have FLAP grants.

Yang Wang

Yang Wang works with the Lexington Chinese School and Fayette County Public Schools in Kentucky as a Chinese teacher. She has served in a heritage Chinese school for four years. She is doing research on setting teaching objectives in heritage Chinese schools and developing Chinese language curriculum for kindergarten. She is particularly interested in helping programs and individuals set up Chinese language programs and curricula in Chinese heritage schools and mainstream kindergarten programs.
