State Capacity-Building Meetings2006 Meeting Summaries CAELA seeks to improve the capacity of states to provide technical assistance to professional developers and teachers of adult English language learners. A major activity supporting this goal is annual capacity-building workshops conducted by CAELA staff for state teams of ESL professionals. The second series of annual workshops was held this March and April, and nearly 100 adult ESL specialists, professional developers, and teachers from 24 states attended. The first two workshops were held this March in Las Vegas, Nevada and Houston, Texas. A third workshop was held in April in Baltimore, Maryland. The chart below shows the states that teams represent.
During these meetings, state teams reported on the progress of their plans for improving the professional development offered to adult ESL practitioners and worked on their plans for the upcoming year. CAELA staff introduced a draft of the CAELA Guide for Adult ESL Trainers and will be providing training on how state teams may use sections from the Guide to provide professional development. In the upcoming quarter CAELA staff will continue to provide technical assistance to the 24 states via telephone conferences, emails, and by participating in some states' professional development activities.
